　　现代五项运动(Modern Pentathlon)由五个比赛项目组成，即射击、击剑、游泳、马术和越野跑。
        　　由“现代奥林匹克之父”法国人顾拜旦先生发起创立。这项运动经改进后在大约一个世纪前进入奥运会。现在，2000年悉尼奥运会又增设女子现代五项项目，为此将男子项目的参赛人数从32人减少到16人，为女子项目留出16人的名额。增设女子项目是近年来这项运动的最新动向。以前，男子项目比赛要花费6天时间，经过商议后，从6天减到了4天，后来从4天改成5天，不久后又改成了4天。
