One does not find many outdoor cafes in Great Britain, for the weather
there often changes during the day. When British people want to have some drinks
either with a group of friends or by themselves, they usually go to a pub. The
“pub” is the short form for “public house”. In a pub people can buy all kinds of
drinks, from beer to orange juice. The Englishman’s favorite drink is beer.
Quite a lot of businessmen have lunch in pubs near their offices because in
many pubs fast food is served. There may even be a restaurant in a pub. The food
they sell is usually cheap and good. In the countryside the pub is often part of
an inn – a kind of small hotel. People can stay there for the night.
The opening time of pubs is set by law. It might be different from place to
place, but usually a pub is open from half past eleven to three o’clock and from
half past five to half past ten or eleven o’clock. In the old days, children
were not allowed to enter pubs, because when people drank too much they could
become troublesome. Today, however, more and more pubs are opening their gardens
to customers, so that the children can play safely in the garden while their
parents are having a quick drink.
Generally speaking, the English pub is a friendly place, and offers good
drink and food.
